Facts About Your Skin
Skin is the largest organ in the human body, serving as the first line of defense, protecting us from the external environment. Skin consists of three main layers: epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue. The main functions are insulation, sensation, temperature regulation, absorption, and excretion. Skin disorders are among the most common health conditions. While most are non-life-threatening, many chronic dermatological conditions, such as eczema, acne, and psoriasis, can significantly impact on one’s quality of life.
Dermatology in TCM
Dermatology is a major part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It falls under the category of “External Medicine”. This part of the study covers a broad scope of different skin conditions. The pathogenesis of skin disorders is understood through the TCM concepts of Qi and Blood, Yin and Yang, and internal Organs. TCM views skin conditions as a manifestation of one’s internal health imbalances (with the exceptions of pure external causes such as virus, bacteria, and insect bites). By restoring the internal balances, or correcting the internal dysfunctions, external skin symptoms can be effectively eliminated, and conditions can be resolved from its root cause.
